Digital Age
Artist Statement
The digital age has brought forth many developments in technology, particularly in photography. Photographers can now use digital cameras that are nearly as good in quality as large format film cameras and phones, which have cameras with a similar quality to DSLR’s. The new improvements to cameras have brought up debates concerning the profession of photography; photography seems to be threatened by people with an iPhone with a good quality camera (Jefferies, 2013).
This project is a response to one of the Nationwide Building Society adverts, called ‘Face to Face’ by Sugar J Poet, a poem which is part of Nationwide’s more recent ad campaign. The poem talks about loneliness in our society and questions whether the technology is helping use to connect with people or making us isolated from the outside world. In my project I will explore the effect of technology on our society and the individual. People now seem to have fewer friends offline than online, resulting in people being more connected but feeling lonelier. (Warrell, 2012)
